A global key opinion leader in the field of Cancer, Stem cells, and Artificial Intelligence, Prof. Hashmi currently serves as the Director of Research at the Department of Health, Abu Dhabi, UAE; he also serves in faculty as a professor (adjunct) of Life Sciences at MBZ-University of Artificial Intelligence (Abu Dhabi), and a consultant hematologist at SSMC, Abu Dhabi.

He chairs/co-chairs many international professional committees/groups including being the Chair of the Worldwide Network for Blood and Marrow Transplant’s (WBMT) Global Emergencies Committee (Geneva, Switzerland), Founding Chair of the American Society for Transplantation and Cellular Therapy’s (ASTCT) Survivorship SIG (Chicago, Illinois, US), and Ex Co-Chair of the Center for International Blood & Marrow Transplant Registry’s (CIBMTR) Health Services Committee (Milwaukee, Wisconsin, US). He was the Dean of Research at SSMC/Mayo Clinic (Abu Dhabi, UAE), and the Chairman of the Dept. of Hematology/Oncology at SSMC/Mayo Abu Dhabi, the Chairman of SEHA Oncology Council UAE, and a full Professor of Medicine (transplant center) at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester (Minnesota) in the past. He is currently serving as a member of Expert Advisory Panel for Transplant at the World Health Organization (WHO) in Geneva.

He graduated from Baqai Medical University with top honors, receiving the Best Graduate Gold Medal, received master’s degree (MPH) from Yale University, Connecticut, US, followed by residency in Preventive Medicine and Internal Medicine, followed by fellowships in Oncology/Hematology and Stem Cell Transplantation. He is triple boarded from the US, being Diplomat of the American Board of Preventive Medicine/Public Health, Internal Medicine, and Hematology. He has served as PI or Co-PI on many industry-sponsored and NIH-sponsored clinical trials. His research interests include premature Aging Biology, Machine Learning (computer vision), and Cellular therapies (CAR-T cells & Gene Therapy). He has authored/co-authored >350 articles in peer-reviewed journals and has >15,000 citations.

His achievements include establishing the first BMT survivorship program of Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, establishing one of the first Clinical Trial Units (CTU) of Saudi Arabia at King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Center (KFSHRC) in Riyadh, KSA, and establishing the UAE’s first CTU at SSMC/Mayo Clinic in Abu Dhabi. He also utilized anti-aging drugs for First-in-Human Trials approved as IND from the US-FDA and continues to serve as PI or Co-PI in Aging trials on Healthspan and lifespan.

Heading the Research/Innovation Departments at various institutions, Prof. Hashmi has been involved in healthcare business ventures, particularly with Venture Capitalists and Private Equity firms, and has facilitated Limited Partnerships with respect to healthcare companies (mainly seed funded & series A).

As an established scientist in Cell & Gene Therapy, along with lifespan/healthspan and Machine Learning (AI), Prof. Hashmi is frequently invited to international forums to deliver plenary talks and has delivered >80 invited lectures/presentations at international forums.

Prof. Hashmi is also active as a Board/Advisory Board Member of many non-governmental organizations including Make-A-Wish Foundation UAE, Cancer Patient Care Society (Rahma) UAE, Rose Nwatu Cancer Foundation (US/Nigeria), Emirates Thalassemia Society UAE, and Make-A-Wish International’s (Arizona, US) Medical Advisory Board.
