Bartek Nogal is a senior scientist at the Buck Institute for Research on Aging, where he develops computational and artificial intelligence approaches to better quantify human health, aging, and disease risk. His work focuses on integrating biobank-scale population data, genomics, clinical biomarkers, and longitudinal health measurements to build interpretable models of biological resilience, healthspan, and precision health.
Bartek earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Biological Engineering from Cornell University before working at NASA Ames Research Center, where he contributed to nanopore technologies for DNA damage detection. He later transitioned to biotechnology, leading engineering and clinical development projects supporting oncology therapeutics at Genentech, Gilead, and Novartis.
He completed his Ph.D. in Integrative Structural and Computational Biology at Scripps Research, where he combined computational modeling with cryo-electron microscopy to study HIV vaccine immunogens. His doctoral work contributed to several publications.
Before joining the Buck Institute, Bartek led the development of direct-to-consumer genomics products at a precision health company, including polygenic risk scores, statistical genetics pipelines, and machine learning methods that integrated genetic, blood biomarker, wearable, and lifestyle data. His current interests center on moving beyond traditional disease-centric definitions toward quantitative, systems-level models of health, aging, and resilience using AI, bioinformatics, and large-scale human datasets.
Outside of research, Bartek enjoys strength training, mountain biking, hiking, reading, and spending time outdoors with his three children and two German Shepherds.
