Chapter Author

Enrique Alcalá Guerrero is a PhD candidate in Engineering and a faculty member at the Department of Applied Physics III, University of Seville, Spain. Working under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Ramón Risco, his research focuses heavily on biomedical engineering applications, specifically tissue and organ cryopreservation. He developes innovative rewarming techniques, with a particular emphasis on using High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) to achieve ultra-fast, uniform rewarming of cryopreserved biological samples to prevent ice formation.

His research is closely linked to the National Center for Accelerators (CNA), where he specializes in Computed Tomography (CT) imaging applied to cryopreservation. Additionally, he holds the official certification as a Radioactive Facilities Supervisor, enabling him to manage and operate sophisticated radiological setups for biomedical analysis.

He holds an MSc in Biomedical Engineering and a BSc in Robotics, Electronics and Mechatronics Engineering from the University of Seville, having dedicated his academic career to the cryopreservation and physiological evaluation of complex biological structures. His investigations include the structural and functional preservation of cardiovascular tissues and other animal models. Furthermore, his multidisciplinary approach extends to integrating Electrical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) into the cryoprotection of samples prior to cooling.

He is an active participant with the international cryobiology community, contributing yearly with scientific communications at the meetings of the Society for Cryobiology and Society for Low Temperature Biology.
