Fahy

Dr. Fahy was born in Los Angeles and obtained his B.S. in biology from the University of California at Irvine in 1972, where he did undergraduate research in gene mapping and cryopreservation and taught a course on aging as an undergraduate. He obtained his Ph.D. in Pharmacology from the Medical College of Georgia in 1977, where he focused on organ cryobiology in the laboratory of Armand M. Karow, Jr. He headed organ cryopreservation research at the American National Red Cross from 1977-1994 in the Cryobiology and Transplantation Laboratories of Dr. Harold T. Meryman, first at the Blood Research Laboratory in Bethesda and then at the Jerome Holland Laboratory in Rockville, MD. Circa 1984, while continuing his work at the Red Cross, he founded The Lifespan Company and carried out mouse lifespan studies for ~two years. At the Red Cross, he introduced low cooling rate vitrification, which revolutionized clinical, laboratory, and agricultural assisted reproduction, developed automated organ cryoprotectant perfusion technology, and demonstrated the first survivals of organs perfused with vitrifiable concentrations of cryoprotective agents. From 1995-1997, he served as the Head of the Tissue Cryopreservation Section of the Transfusion and Cryopreservation Research Program of the Naval Medical Research Institute in Bethesda and as the Chief Scientist of LRT, Inc., and of Organ, Inc., an organ cryopreservation company. From 1997-1998, he was a Visiting Scholar in the biogerontology laboratory of Dr. Stephen Spindler at UC Riverside and began a position as the Director of Research at the Institute of Neural Cryobiology operating at Harbor-UCLA in Torrance and served as a consultant to 21st Century Medicine, Inc. In 1998, he became the Vice President for Cryopreservation Research at 21st Century Medicine, where he continued to advance to his present positions of Executive Director, Chairman of the Board, and Chief Scientific Officer by 2019. In 2014, he co-founded Intervene Immune with bioengineer, hedge fund manager, and immunotherapy entrepreneur Robert T. Brooke and carried out the TRIIM clinical trial on human thymus regeneration from 2015-2017, with follow-on trials (the TRIIM-X series) continuing from 2020 through the present. In 2009, he published the first demonstration of life support after vitrifying and transplanting a vital mammalian organ (the rabbit kidney), in 2019, he published the first demonstration of thymus regeneration and of the reversal of 4 different aging clocks in healthy human volunteers, and in 2025, he published the first demonstration of clinically normal survival of a rabbit for nearly 500 days after receiving a vitrified kidney as the only renal support. He holds 44 patents, has published over 100 full scientific papers, is the recipient of the Bacon Award, the Arthur W. Rowe Best Paper of the Year Award for the journal Cryobiology in 2019 and 2025, the Large Mammal Brain Preservation Prize, the Cryopreservation Award, the Small Mammal Brain Preservation Prize, The Distinguished Scientist Award for Reproductive Biology from the American Society of Reproductive Medicine, and the Grand Prize for Medicine of INPEX. He served as a Governor of the Society for Cryobiology from 2017-2018 and as the President Elect and as the President of the Society for Cryobiology from 2019-2023, was named as a Fellow of the Society for Cryobiology, of the American Aging Association, and of the Foresight Institute, and serves on the editorial board of Rejuvenation Research. His paper introducing vitrification as a method of cryopreservation in Cryobiology remains the most-cited paper ever published in that journal, and his paper describing human thymus regeneration and aging clock reversals in Aging Cell is presently rated #3 in attention received out of over 3220 papers in the same category according to Altmetric (>99.9th percentile).
